Don't Overlook the Dash!

Grady EMS unit 7230 taken in late July of 2007...Surely everyone that reads this has, at some point, went to a graveyard and looked down on a tombstone and read the name, birthday and the day the person passed away.  For most people, their tombstone is elaborate and with different sayings, designs and some even photos of the person six foot below, but very few people notice the most important thing on the tombstone.  Its more than likely the smallest thing on the tombstone, its straight and to the point.  It has no design.  Its on every single tombstone probably ever created and yet rarely considered important at all, yet it tells us everything about who we ever were.  It's the dash!

Its the mark that is in between when we are born and when we die! It's important!  Your journey through life, whether 25 or 75, is in part characterized by how you manage that dash so you can't forget it!  You have internal and external experiences that shape how your life goes.

In EMS/Fire or public service as a whole, it is hard to control what external experiences that we have on a daily basis, but it is possible to control what we allow to become internal experiences.  Life is about control, it is about management and it is about our journey!  It's about our dash!

Over the next few weeks I want to take the time and help you understand how to control those internal forces that shape your life.  Managing life, stress, and other factors is about management.  You are the manager of the most important person in the world!  You are valuable! You are someone with something that is exciting!

Now let me say before we get started.  While you read the post over the next few weeks you may notice that a lot of what I am saying has a Christian perspective on it but that is my background and I hope you read it with an open mind.  I am always available for free and confidential help for anyone that needs it so please do not hesitate to call me.  I want to help you realize how important the dash is and not the fact that you were born and surely not the fact that you will die!  It's about the dash!
